1 dead, deputy hurt after shooting at Lewisburg hair salon

One man is dead and a sheriff’s deputy was injured after shots were fired at a Lewisburg hair salon Monday morning.

Authorities were called to 1300 Ellington Parkway around 10:15 a.m. after they say Steven Hopwood, who had an active order of protection against him, entered C.W. Cuts. Witnesses told News 2 his ex-wife was working at the salon.

Shots were fired when a deputy with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office first responded to the scene. The deputy was hurt and is being treated for a non-life threatening injury.

Hopwood continued to fire shots at additional deputies who were called to the scene. None of them were hurt.

Hopwood was found dead once the SWAT Team arrived to the scene and entered the salon. It is unknown how the 51-year-old man died and an autopsy will be performed.“Police, they had their guns out,” witness Keisha Montgomery said. “There were six or seven of them waiting to go in.”

“Before all the police got here we heard, ‘Suspect down,’ and there was bleeding under the doorway, and then we backed off because we were really close [and] did not want to get shot,” witness Jessica Blackwell said.

Several hostages were also found unharmed inside the salon.

TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland said it is not immediately known if Hopwood was violating the order of protection against him by being at the salon.

The investigation is ongoing.
